Joshua Harris’ Sex Is Not the Problem (Lust Is): Sexual Purity in a Lust-Saturated Worldaddresses a critical area for our world today. While there have always been sexual sins and struggles throughout history, it does seem increasingly prevalent and even acceptable in our world today. Harris adds his book to the list of other Christian books on sexual issues. His, however, is one of the best I’ve ever read. Others too have said similar statements after reading it. In addition to his sound Biblical footing throughout the book, he also addresses each chapter with a refreshing practicality and humility. Personal illustrations and lessons learned appear all throughout each chapter. I especially appreciate his premise regarding sex and lust. Among Christian circles there is too often a tendency to address sexual issues in way that makes sex seem wrong or like something dirty. Harris accurately draws our attention to the heart level of lust, which fits perfectly with Jesus’ teaching on the defiling nature of the heart of mankind. One other noteworthy aspect is the Christ-centered way that freedom from sexual enslavement is presented. Harris addresses the legalistic tendency of one’s battle to overcome a sexual struggle. Finding freedom does take our effort, but that effort must first and foremost be rooted in a trust in Jesus and His conquering power over all sin. So, if you’re looking for a good book related to sexual issues, I would highly recommend this one. It’s not too long of a read either, coming in at just around 150 pages. Additionally, there are two helpful study guides (one for guys and one for the gals) that would work well in either a small group or a counseling/discipleship setting. Find them here:
